BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Inglewood Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT gate motor replacements for Inglewood properties, with most swing-gate motor swaps running between $950 and $1,800 installed depending on the model and whether the existing arm bracket is intact. Our trucks carry BFT-compatible motors and the common failure parts, so many replacements are done same-day once we confirm the model on site. Most owners discover the motor has failed when the gate stops mid-travel, hums without moving, or throws an error code that won’t clear.

That slow grind, the gate stopping six inches short of closed, the control board flashing a fault you’ve never seen before: these are the BFT-specific failures Adrian Vance and our techs see on driveways around Centinela Avenue and the neighborhoods off Arbor Vitae. The good news is that a BFT motor replacement is a known-quantity job. We can name the price before we pick up a tool, and we leave you a photo record of what was installed so no future technician has to guess.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

This page covers the BFT swing-gate motor lines most common in Inglewood residential installs: the Phobos series (Phobos N, Phobos BT, Phobos A), the Deimos series, and older Ares and Icaro models still running on a lot of 1990s and early 2000s gates. Sliding-gate BFT motors, like the Rigel and Aries lines, are a different conversation, and we service those too, but the failure patterns and replacement logic differ.

The fastest way to identify your motor is to check the metal label on the housing. It lists the model name, the serial number, and the voltage (most Inglewood residential BFT motors are 115V or low-voltage 24V). If the label is sun-faded or missing, measure the bolt spacing on the mounting flange. Phobos motors use a different flange pattern than Deimos units, and guessing wrong means drilling new holes in the gate post. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: BFT’s Italian-built motors are solid, but they sit in inventory for months before reaching California, and a quality aftermarket equivalent from a supplier like All-O-Matic or a US distributor often ships with a longer local warranty and identical bolt spacing. We’ll quote both and tell you honestly which makes sense for a 15-year-old gate versus a 4-year-old one.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Gate hums but doesn’t move. The motor is getting power but the capacitor or the internal gear has failed. On Phobos units, a swollen capacitor is the usual culprit, and it’s a $40 part, but if the hum is accompanied by a burnt smell, the motor windings have likely cooked and the unit is done.

Gate stops mid-travel and reverses. The obstruction sensor is doing its job, or the motor’s torque sensor is reading false resistance from worn gears. We’ve found gates along Inglewood’s older hillside streets where the problem was a misaligned photo-eye half the time and a failing motor the other half.

Error code on the control board that won’t clear. BFT boards flash diagnostic codes. A persistent motor overload fault after the gate has been manually opened and closed freely usually means the motor is drawing too much current and the board is protecting itself.

Gate moves slower than it used to. Worn bearings, tired motor brushes (on older non-brushless models), or binding in the hinge can all cause it. A BFT motor that’s lost 30 percent of its travel speed is telling you something.

Manual release is stuck or grinding. The manual release mechanism on BFT motors is a small lever or keyed cylinder. If it’s seized from rust, the motor may still run, but you won’t be able to open the gate when the power is out, which means you’ll be calling us anyway on the day it matters.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Inglewood homes, expect a BFT swing-gate motor replacement to run between $950 and $1,800 installed. At the low end, you’re looking at a single Phobos-equivalent motor with the existing arm and brackets reused. At the high end, you’re replacing a paired Deimos setup, installing new limit switches, and addressing a corroded mount plate.

Job Component Typical Range (Inglewood)
Single swing-gate motor (BFT-compatible) $450 - $850
Arm and bracket (if corroded or seized) $120 - $300
Control board (if the motor failure damaged it) $180 - $400
Labor for motor swap $250 - $450

There’s one BFT-specific gotcha that affects Inglewood pricing: the salt air. If you’re within a couple miles of the coast, the motor’s internal zinc plating and the external mounting hardware corrode faster than they would inland. We’ve seen 6-year-old Phobos motors on Pacific-facing lots with mounting bolts that needed to be cut off. New stainless hardware and a corrosion-resistant treatment add roughly $75 to $150 to the job, and it’s worth every dollar. Every quote we write is a flat price, in writing, before work starts. No surprises at the end. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1, every time.

A BFT motor replacement sits in that middle zone: the mechanical work is straightforward for someone with the right tools, but the electrical and safety implications are real. The motor runs on 115V or 24V, both of which can bite, and a miswired limit switch on a heavy iron gate can send several hundred pounds into a car, a wall, or a person. We don’t recommend owner-installed BFT motor swaps unless you have experience with low-voltage control wiring and a multimeter.

What you can safely check: the breaker, the photo-eye alignment, the manual release mechanism, and whether the gate moves freely by hand. If the gate swings easily and the photo-eye is clean and aligned, and the motor still won’t run, that’s a motor or control board problem, not a gate problem. Call (424) 380-7998. We’ll send a named technician, we’ll photograph what we find, and we’ll hand you a written price before any work begins.
